| The Gewurztraminer | ||
Gewurztraminer is a particularly aromatic selection of an age-old Alsace variety, Traminer Rose. In the past, and especially when it was a little less characteristic, the wine was simply called Traminer. It should be noted in passing that Klevener de Heiligenstein, cultivated in a small region near Barr, is another form of that ancient variety, known as Savagnin Rose, and is even more aromatic. The name Gewurztraminer literally means “spicy Traminer”. Description Gewurztraminer is an early-ripening variety of average yield. Its adult leaves are small, rounded, with three red-veined lobes. The grapes are small, round and pink or pale red in colour. Terroir Gewurztraminer is well suited to marl-limestone, granite and clay-sand soils. Gastronomy A perfect illustration of the originality and character of Alsace wines, Gewurztraminer makes an ideal match for richly-flavoured dishes and strong cheeses like Munster. It is wonderful with foie gras, but also with even the strongest spices and aromatic herbs. This makes it a perfect partner for many Asian culinary specialities : Chinese, Cantonese, Sichuan, Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai and Indian. |
